It was a sad, dark morning in Valhalla, the skies were overcast and rain had been falling since the stars had begun to fade from the sky. The weather seemed to reflect the tragic event that would soon be discovered. Queen Helle had passed away in her sleep, none was aware of the heart breaking news until Hilde had went to wake her. When she hadn't been woken by words Hilde had shaken the shoulders of Helle only to discover that she wasn't breathing. She'd summoned a healer but it had been too late, there was nothing that could be done. News of the Queen's death passed through the castle in sorrowful whispers as the Queens most trusted advisers debated how to tell the four Princess's of what had happened. They all agreed that Ailyth, the oldest and only Princess who wasn't a daughter of the Queen, would be the easiest to tell because she would be able to keep her composure and hold it together for the sake of everyone.
Once this had been decided it fell to Hilde to break the news to the Princesses, starting with Ailyth.
After knocking twice on Ailyth's door and getting no answer she gave up, muttering something under her breath she stepped into the room, walking straight over to the bed and laying a hand upon her arm. Her heart felt heavy as she prepared herself for delivering the tragic news. "Ailyth."
The contact and sound of a voice made Ailyth instantly awaken, her eyes narrowed as she looked up at the woman standing over her. Why is someone standing over me? It had just over a week since she'd returned to Valhalla and last night had been the first full nights sleep that she'd had since returning, the soft beds were taking some getting used to and recently she'd had a lot on her mind. Between the plague and then meeting a man who she actually found attractive her head was all over the place.
"Hilde? What is it?" They never woke her up unless something was wrong, they never needed to due to her being a naturally early riser so that they'd felt the need to wake her instantly told her that something was amiss. A feeling of dread seized her as she waited for Hilde to answer her.
"I'm sorry to awaken you but it is your Aunt, the Queen..." This instantly made Ailyth sit upright in her bed. "Helle has passed away in her sleep." Those words froze the very heart of Ailyth, her aunt hadn't been a young woman but as far as everyone had known she'd been healthy enough. She had still been going out riding, had still gone hunting and done everything that her niece and daughters did.
For several long seconds Ailyth was silent. She didn't know what to say. "Have my cousins been told yet?" Ailyth knew that they would not take the news well and neither they should. Something felt wrong with this situation but Ailyth couldn't put her finger on it, all she knew was that her aunt hadn't died of natural causes, it was too sudden, too unexpected and unexplainable. Just thinking about it chilled the blood of the usually fiery woman. Would someone dare to kill the Amazon Queen? There is no-one but her daughters who would benefit from her death though and surely...no, they wouldn't plot to kill their mother.
She told herself these were thoughts born of shock and grief but she couldn't shake them.
Hilde seemed to notice that troubling thoughts were running through the mind of Ailyth for she laid a hand upon her shoulder. "You should go and say your goodbyes before she joins our Lady Freya." Ailyth nodded numbly as she slipped her legs over the edge of the bed while Hilde left her to tell her cousins of the events that had transpired the night before. She didn't bother changing her clothes, she left the room in a simple cloth tunic and trousers, not even bothering to put on shoes. In a daze she walked to the room that belonged to her aunt, ignoring those she walked by she stepped into the room and walked straight over to the bed where her aunt lay, taking her cold hand in her own as tears finally started to flow and Ailyth lost all composure...
She looks so pale that it was hard to believe that this was the same woman that had been laughing and joking with her mere hours ago. Her skin felt cold and all the tenderness that had once come from her touch was gone. Leaning forward Ailyth placed her forehead to her aunt's, her tears continuing to flow. "Freya embrace you and keep you safe Helle..." Ailyth couldn't hold herself together, she kissed her aunt's head before rising and quickly leaving the room before she broke down completely.
Once she was behind the safety of her bedroom door she broke down completely, sliding down the door as she cried openly now that there was no-one around to see her appearing so weak.
----------------------------------------------
Three days later the Amazons gathered together under the stars to return their Queen to the side of Freya. The Queen's daughters, niece and sister stood by the funeral pyre that her body was lain upon, all five holding a torch to set the pyre alight when the time came. Lofn spoke fondly of her sister, the former Amazon Princess told of how they'd always been close despite her leaving the Amazons to be a warlords life, her words had Ailyth crying silent tears.
For Ailyth it was like seeing a mother laying there, she'd always been close to her aunt and when her mother had left the Amazons to be with her father they'd only grown closer. Helle had always treated her like a daughter...
They sung several songs to appease Freya, to beseech the Goddess to help Helle's spirit find Freya's side. The four Princesses and Lofn then led a final prayer before they set fire to the pyre one by one. All stood in silence watching as the pyre burned before them, their eyes and cheeks wet with tears. No words could be heard over the roar of the fire but whispers eventually moved through the gathered women as they tried to figure out which of the daughters would be their new Queen.
Ailyth watched the dancing flames, thinking about the final coversation that she and her aunt had shared a mere six hours before she'd been discovered dead. Her aunt had been teasing her about her attraction to a Wyraki man she'd met recently, Helle had found it highly amusing that stubborn Ailyth had finally admitted that a man could be attractive. 'You know Ailyth, Princesses are allowed to have fun too.' Her aunt had winked at her and then walked away, leaving a stunned Ailyth blinking in the hall.
Someone next to her spoke and drew her away from the memory. "Which of the Princesses did Helle leave as her sucessor?Helle never announced it..." Only Hilde knew who the next Queen would be and so far she'd refused to answer anyone's questions on the subject. They would receive their answer when the flames burned out, as was tradition.
As the flames died down Ailyth and Lofn moved away from pyre, embracing one another in a comforting manner as they waited to hear who would be the next Queen. Neither knew who the next Queen would be, Helle had taught each of them different aspects of ruling and had always been somewhat mute on the subject of her heir. As the former Queen's adviser stepped forward and took her place before the smoldering embers all was silent again. Ailyth watched her cousins as she listened to the adviser speak, one of them was about to be named Queen, it was a big moment for them. One would soon be Queen, one made her heir and one would marry one of the Wyraki princes.
"It was the will of Queen Helle, may she rule forever by Freya's side, that her successor would be..." There was a pause and Ailyth was sure most of the Amazons were holding her breath in anticipation. "Her niece, Ailyth."
It took Ailyth several moments to fully realize what had just been said and she looked towards the adviser in shock. "W-What?" she asked, her voice showing her shock and she was not the only shocked face among the Amazons but a minute later they were hailing her as Queen and all she could do was stand there in shock as the adviser walked over to her, placing the mark of Freya upon her forehead to show her ascension to Queen. The Amazons continued to hail her as she was lead away by the adviser, still wondering how all of this had happened.
Ailyth was shocked to the point of numbness, she didn't know what to say, this had been rather unexpected to say the least. As Hilde explained to her that her aunt had chosen her due to seeing her as the strongest leader of the Princesses, and she was the one that had spent the most time away from Valhalla, giving her the most worldly experience.
"I see." It was the first thing that Ailyth had said since finding out that she was now Queen. It was strange but right now all she wanted to do was sit down and try to figure out how this had happened.
"Get some rest Ailyth, I know this is a lot to take in. A good nights sleep will help all of this make sense and you'll need to be rested for your first day as Queen." Hilde walked Ailyth to her room, she stepped inside her room and silent laid on the bed. Unable to sleep the night dragged on until the sun was rising over the mountain and she rose from the bed as the Amazon's Queen.
